Following
a trip to Washington, D.C. in 2003 and seeing an energetic
group of middle school students singing and dancing
on-stage was the inspiration for a CD Music Production
class for the afterschool program at 186th Street
Elementary School in Gardena, California. The
project became a collaboration between Chasm Entertainment,
musical artists, a dedicated afterschool staff, and
supportive parents to make this dream come true. The
result, a CD entitled, “Love
The Kids”… Voices of 186th Street School,
has been produced for your listening enjoyment.
In this CD, you will hear voices of children who attend
186th Street School. They have dedicated their Thursday
afternoons to writing, re-writing, learning songs and
practicing over and over again, before going to the
recording studio. Saturdays were spent at Chasm Entertainment
Recording Studio in Harbor City, California recording
songs about our elementary school, the playground, homework,
the future, getting along with others, using our imagination
and special poems written by each student.
Our group has included students from all ethnic groups,
including English Language Learners and special education
students. Proceeds from this project will be donated
to the 186th Street School Healthy Start Program, which
focuses on physical and mental health needs of students,
afterschool programs and parent/community strategies
to improve the lives of all children and their families.
